The Generative Erase feature allows users to selectively remove elements from their photos using AI. In the examples shared by Microsoft, a dog’s leash and unintentional photobombers are seamlessly erased, showcasing the capabilities of generative AI in photo editing.

Backporting to Windows 10

Microsoft is not limiting this feature to Windows 11; it’s also bringing all AI edit features, including Generative Erase and background removal, to Windows 10. Additionally, Windows 11 for Arm64 devices will be included in the rollout. This move ensures that users across different Windows versions can benefit from the advanced photo editing capabilities.

Availability for Windows Insiders

While the excitement builds for Generative Erase, the feature is currently available for Windows Insiders. Microsoft mentions, “This update is beginning to roll out to Windows Insiders in all channels today (including Windows Insiders on Windows 10 in the Release Preview Channel). Make sure to update your app to version number 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher.”

The company’s blog post does not specify whether AI-edited photos will include metadata or watermarks to distinguish them from unedited ones. This new feature adds another layer to the photo editing capabilities within the Windows ecosystem, making advanced AI-based editing accessible to a broader user base.
